The second volume in this series of chamber music which provides a broad range of material for young musicians of all ages, from music play school to conservatory. The pieces can be performed as chamber music (quartet) without conductor, or by a full string orchestra.

Even the youngest performers can understand the pieces as complete entities, because miniature musical forms have been chosen. When the young musician assimilates the form of the music he performs, he does not merely play his part routinely, but participates in the recreation of the work. For this reason form-analysis is one of the most important tasks of the conductor/director.The arrangements for volumes 1, 2 & 3 are presented as scores only instead of individual parts. Reading from the score develops visual and aural skills and musicianship. The pieces appear in the same order as in the violin Colourstrings ABC, and as there is no methodic or didactic purpose to the order in the chamber music series, the teacher/conductor may choose each concert programme according to his or her own taste. These volumes contain a wealth of sight-reading material from which the teacher may select the technically and emotionally appropriate items for more intensive rehearsal leading to subsequent performance.Although some bowings and fingerings have been indicated, in many instances no preference has been shown because it is assumed that teachers often prefer to do their own editing, bearing in mind the varying levels of attainment of their pupils. This series in which Finnish and Hungarian children’s songs enjoy prominence, has been designed to develop technical skill and give artistic joy wherever young musicians meet together.
