This is the First Book in the Rhythm Rascals Series and follows on from the Singing Rascals series of books.
The Singing and Rhythm Rascals series form the foundation for starting to learn an instrument using the Colourstrings methodology. The songs and rhythms in the books are repeated right through the instrumental courses giving children instant familiarity with the compositions.
Parent and child can sing and clap the words, then progress to singing the words and tapping the beat on his or her lap. The material is organised starting from the simpler rhythm combinations and proceeding to the more complex. The songs also lend themselves to exploring a variety of musical concepts such as fast/slow, loud/quiet and phrasing.
The first song, Clitter Clatter represents the same regular beat throughout the song. The Cheerful Train follows with a rhythm pattern that is predominantly twice the rhythm value. Subsequent songs introduce the feel of a 2-beat note, a 3-beat note and a 4-beat note. Aeroplaning Archie then introduces quicker rhythms that come naturally to young children. The last two songs contain periods of silence that can be felt through physical gestures.
There are 2 books in the Rhythm Rascals Series – TA and TI TI.
A CD is also available and each song is presented in different ways – with words, in rhythm names, sung alone or in groups and encourages the child to feel and understand different rhythms through singing and playing.
